Origins
Initially Ukraine was a part of the Russian empire at the Olympics from 1900-1912. Then later would compete as a part of the Soviet Union from the years 1952-1988. During the time Ukraine was a part of the USSR, Ukrainian athletes made up about 25% of the USSR’s Olympic athletes. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, in 1990 the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine was created. Although it did take another three years to recognized by the International Olympic committee. Ukraine first got to participate in the Olympics as an independent nation in the year 1994. Since 1994 Ukraine has earned 148 total medals, including 38 gold, 38 silver, and 72 bronze.
