History of Ukrainian hockey

Early days of Ukrainian hockey 1905-1940

Hockey in Ukraine can be traced back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first game was played in 1905 in Lviv. After years off from the sport due to WWI, hockey resumed in 1925 with the formation of the Lviv Regional Union of Hockey. The city became a popular spot for the sport, home to dominant teams while hosting national championships.

The height of Ukrainian hockey occurred in the 1920s and 30s. Lviv’s Pogon Lwow experienced tremendous success in district and national competitions. However, WWII disrupted the growing hockey scene in Ukraine, and the post-war soviet invasion led to the termination of many teams.

Post Soviet Union:

When Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1992, the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine became autonomous. Additionally, the Ukrainian National team was formed and made its international debut in 1992, quickly rising through the ranks. Notable achievements include winning gold in the C Pool in the 1997 world championships and participating in the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Notable Ukrainian Players in the NHL:

Numerous Ukrainian ice hockey players have made their mark in the NHL. Alexander Godynyuk paved the way in 1990 when the Toronto Maple Leaves drafted him in the sixth round. Players like Dimitri Khristich and Alexei Zhitnik, followed after Godynyuk and showcased Ukrainian talent in America. There have been 8 total Ukrainians in the NHL combining for 596 goals and 772 assists.
